Narrative Design

Almost every designer has walked into a bookstore and bought a book purely based on its design. While it's not always wise to judge a book by its cover, sometimes it can lead you to discovering a true gem.

Recently I picked up Kit Hinrichs’ new monograph at a small bookstore I discovered while exploring the Potrero Hill neighborhood in San Francisco. It was on display in the art and design section and it immediately caught my attention. Titled, Narrative Design: A Fifty Year Perspective, the book features an elegant black cover with a collage of Hinrichs’ work showcased within seven columns with the title, his name, and publisher’s logo placed sideways in between. It was a beautiful, well-crafted book cover design that entices readers to explore the designer’s work hidden within its pages.

Published by Graphis in 2023, the monograph is a fascinating dive into Kit Hinrichs' impressive five-decade career, including the 23 years he spent as a Pentagram partner in the San Francisco-based office. The book also contains a lot of his more recent work he produced at Studio Hinrichs, a design firm he opened in 2009.

From iconic logos to thought-provoking posters, Hinrichs delves into the art of weaving compelling narratives through captivating visuals. Drawing from his vast portfolio and experiences, he shares insights, anecdotes, and lessons learned, offering a rare glimpse into the creative process behind some of his most celebrated works. It’s a book that I believe will help designers like myself solve visual problems from a narrative design approach.

This book isn't just for designers though—anyone who loves visual storytelling will find it fascinating. It's packed with lessons and inspirations that can spark creativity in readers of all kinds. So, next time you find yourself in a bookstore and spot a book with a beautiful cover design, go ahead and pick it up.
